About Us
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender
Helpline of Rhode Island is an all-volunteer
resource and referral service providing
assistance to members, loved ones, and
supporters of the LGBT community.
The helpline, originally known as the "Gay
Helpline", was founded in 1976 by members of
the Metropolitan Community Church. At first
the helpline was a telephone number
individuals could call to speak with someone
regarding problems or concerns. As time
passed, the line went from being a friendly
ear to an information and referral source.
In 1987 the helpline changed its name to the
"Gay and Lesbian Helpline" in an attempt to
reflect the diversity of its membership and
in 2000 the name was changed once more to
the "GLBT Helpline" to further encompass the
scope of the entire community.
As the oldest organization continuing to
serve the Rhode Island community, we feel an
obligation and responsibility to continue to
offer resources and referrals to those individuals
in need. Due to the increased use of the
Internet, in 2007 the GLBT Helpline began
offering its services solely through this
website.
